Playground surfaces – what are your options?
The first in our series of playground and play area surfaces looks at ‘wet pour’
When it comes to playground surfaces there are lots of different options, with some products more suitable than others. It’s also helpful to know which products can be joined together on larger areas, or what surface is best when play apparatus is installed.
The most common play surface is wet pour; a mixture of very small rubber crumb mixed with a solvent free binder. Because the surface is rubber its has a soft, almost spongey feel to walk on. We call our wet pour product Absorb-a-Fall. A name chosen because it reflects what the surface is designed to do; absorb the impact should someone fall onto it.
When installing a wet pour surface, we work to specific measures and guidelines to ensure the surface has the correct amount of safety protection. This is also careful calculated when play apparatus, such as climbing frames, swings and slides involved.
It is possible to make these adjustments as the surface is laid in two layers. The base layer is the impact absorbing layer, and the top layer is where the creativity and designs are introduced.
Rubber can come in a variety of different colours allowing us create vibrant designs ideal for themed play, or to match branding colours, logos or emblems. Research suggests that introducing letters and numbers into play surfaces can stimulate learning, and as such this is one of our more popular themes.
One of the added benefits of a rubber play surface like Absorb-a-Fall is the porosity of the product. Water can drain through the surface allowing for all year round usage. This also reduces the required maintenance required compared to more traditional harder play surfaces.
Finally, wet pour is a continuous laid surface, meaning there are no gaps, this makes it trip free and also suitable for wheelchair use.
