Glossary

OPEN GRADED

OPEN GRADED
Composed of aggregate with very few fines, making it permeable.

OVERLAY

OVERLAY
To cover the surface with an alternative colour or surface if required.

PAH TESTING

PAH TESTING
PAHs can cause carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. The European Commission has restricted concentrations of 8 carcinogenic PAHs in consumer products that contact the skin or mouth. All of DCM’s products are closely monitored to ensure that they meet legal requirements.

POLYMERIC

Granules of rubber held together by a binding agent of polyurethane and sprayed with a high-traction, coloured top-coat.

POLYMERIC TYPE 1

POLYMERIC TYPE 1
The most common application of polymeric surfacing in sport is for athletics running tracks, but it is also popular for tennis, netball and basketball courts, multi-use games areas, and indoor sports floors. As with most synthetic sports surfaces, the polymeric system is available in a range of specifications to meet different performance standards.

POLYMERIC TYPE 2

POLYMERIC TYPE 2
Open textured porous macadam areas used for ball rebound sports where tennis is the priority and sports such as mini-tennis, netball, and basketball are secondary users. Slip resistance is TRRL 60.

POLYMERIC TYPE 3

POLYMERIC TYPE 3
Open textured porous macadam areas used for ball rebound sports where netball is the priority and sports such as tennis, mini-tennis, and basketball are secondary users. Slip resistance is TRRL75.

POLYMERIC TYPE 4

POLYMERIC TYPE 4
Polymeric surface over macadam base areas used for recreational football, basketball and general sports and recreational training and play. Due to their greater shock absorbency and lower surface friction, these areas are not recommended for tennis or netball.

POLYURETHANE RESIN BINDER

POLYURETHANE RESIN BINDER
A Polyurethane Resin is used in varying quantities to bring the EPDM or SBR rubber granules together.

POROUS

POROUS
Contains minute spaces through which water may pass.

RAMPING DOWN

RAMPING DOWN
Where there is no edge, the surface can be sloped down to prevent a trip hazard.

RESIN BONDED GRAVEL

RESIN BONDED GRAVEL
The process of scattering loose dried aggregates onto a coating of resin after the resin has been applied to the surface.
